What you need to know when visiting Japan

1. Using trains:

  • The difficult thing about using the railway is the signs & labeling. Sometimes they do not put the name of the line but has symbols of the line or name of the company the line is under. For instance, instead of mentioning “Asakusa line” it may say the company “Toei”.
  • The same platforms may use different lines. Therefore it is important to check the destination where the train is passing and the time your train is expected to arrive.

2. Visiting restaurants:

  • Similar to western restaurants, the receipts will be handed to you on the table. However, most of the time you will pay in the counter instead of where you are seated.
  • In some ramen restaurant, you will have to order and pay from a ticket machine, then bring the ticket to the staff in the counter.
  • Talking on the phone in the train is not allowed
