WordPress themes I like

Here are some WordPress themes that I like and is worth making note of for future reference:

Personal blog & hobby themes:

  • 90’s Retro (Organic Themes): This retro theme which I am currently using as of no. Sadly it is no longer is available for download. But I just like the retro black and green theme. The description of the theme was also charming: “Have you ever wished your WordPress blog looked like an old Geocities site from the 90s!? Probably not! The 90s Retro Theme is designed to look like an old website with pixel fonts, neon colors, background music and animated GIFs — mostly because we thought it would be funny. However, it’s a great theme for gamers, guilds, video game reviews, collectors, kids and nostalgic adults.”. Isn’t the description cute! One issue for some may be that there isn’t much options the change in the setting but who would do such as thing! And bless that retro 8bit music (come and find me)! Here are some interesting facts you may want to read up on regarding this retro theme or read the excerpt below.
  • RetroGeek (by tuxlog): Another retro green & black theme I would love to use if I have the opportunity to.
  • Elementare (from CrestaProject): I really like the default colour scheme of this theme. It has a navy blue (#13293d) header back and the green (#6ee004) header accent highlights colour. Great font and general theme that feels right. It can also be used for woocommence. However, one criticism is the built social media icon oddly floats on the botton left side of the screen! Also the social media icon from WordPress tool has a distorted shape. To rectify this issue, consider downloading a social media icon pluggin. It’s a friendly style theme and I can see myself using this in hobby based websites.

Article/journal style themes:

  • GutenBee (from CSSIgniter): This theme has a modest yet sophisticated touch to it. I guess it’s owe to the default colour scheme using the light grey/blue (#e7eff2) header background colour and the System font Logo font. I would use this theme for something academic with a relaxed feel to it.
  • fTourism (from tishonator): Despite the name tourism with it’s of design for plenty of thumbnail photos, I see it more as a science journal. Perhaps it’s due to the turquoise colour site title font and style of font I used to see in my science text book.
  • Online consulting (from Grace Theme): I really like theme. It has a profession, clean and bold style. The header background is almost white with contrasting bold blue (#2684e5) menu tab coloured.  I can see this theme suit a professional psychology website.

Professional/project style theme:

I consider project style as themes that has a big header cover image and text to clearly illustrate it’s identity. It’s aim is to have visual emotional impact to depict it’s core purpose of the project.

  • Clean Charity (from Bizberg theme): I like the clean crisp design and the font. It has a headcover and social media icon on the top header. It has a profession style so it can be versatile and be used in projects as well as businesses. The same theme but with larger header cover can be found in other Bizberg Themes such as Bizberg Agency, Fully Green or NGO Charity Fundraising. I really think Bizberg Theme does a really great job on these themes.
  • Bizberg Individual Consultant (from Bizberg Theme): Another one of Bizberg’s great design. It has a dark transparent header background which blends will with the front cover picture – very slick! Again, with Bizberg’s usual social media icon on the top header. Similar to this theme can be found in other bizberg themes such as Plant Green, Green Globe and Get Education.
  • Walker Charity (from WalkerWP): It’s a clean and friendly theme to use. It has a custom button (give donation) and social media icon in the header.  The default site title font is a bit too bit and it’s title font width size can be small so make sure adjust it in the setting if yo have long site title. The shape of the WordPress social media icon function in the wiedge gets distorted so you will need a social media icon pluggin.
  • CharityUp (from Ascendoor): Like Walker Charity, it also has custom button that stands up for something like “Donate”. The default primary colour is yellow, which is odd for me, so you may want to change it.
  • Crcote Corporate (from WproBust): Similarly to CharityUp theme, there is a custom button in this case, Get A Quote” button. It also has social media icon and contact info on the top header. Different from other themes, it has an customisable editor section and not a usual tick box options. This theme is built for Corporate businesses.
  • Wallstreet (from Webriti): The transparent dark header background and the bold tab font makes it very slick. It overlaps and merge with the header cover picture. I can’t seem to have access to the social media icon from the version, so I assume it’s only available for paid themes. I am not fond of the dark grey back either.
  • University Zone (from Rara theme): Nothing too special about this theme but I would use it as a traditional old fashion standard project theme. Clean white header with menu tabs in the button of the logo. It has a headcover picture with text and call to action button.
  • Societas (from xideathemes):  Business style theme but can also be used for projects. The default theme is just a plain black background header. Business style template such as a header image and three info graphic/call to action button can be generated through the editor.
  • Minamaze Blog (from Think Up Blog): Social media icon on the top. Front cover pictures and info graphic images below. This can also be used for businesses theme too. See below in the business section for more variation of theme style of theme.

Business theme:

  • Melos (from ThinkUpThemes): Very business like theme with a header image slider and three lower info graphic/call to action button. The font is rather small and there is no setting to change it in the free version, however, it is fine as it’s not an article based theme.
  • Melos shop (from ThinkUpThemes): I find this a lot better in design than Melos theme above. It follows the similar template with the header imagine slider and three lower info graphic/call to action buttons, but it is much more cleaner and crisp in design. It is pretty much white in background except for the menu tabs and there is a boarder around the text box. I can also see this use in project based websites as well.
  • Minamaze (from ThinkUpThemes): Very similar theme and template to Melos as described above as it is from the same creators. However, this version is more clean and slick without any coloured in the main menu tab background except from the black top header. Any small font that can’t be change in the free version. It is fine as it’s not an article based theme.
  • Minamaze Blog (from ThinkUpThemes): see above in Project style section.

More about the 90s Retro theme:

Here is a description from my favourite theme 90’s Retro:

“Have you ever wished your WordPress blog looked like an old Geocities site from the 90s!? Probably not! The 90s Retro Theme is designed to look like an old website with pixel fonts, neon colors, background music and animated GIFs — mostly because we thought it would be funny. However, it’s a great theme for gamers, guilds, video game reviews, collectors, kids and nostalgic adults.”

And upon reading more about it on the creator website, I realised it was actually made to be used for April fools joke!

“The Retro Theme was created as an April Fool’s joke, and designed to emulate the Geocities website styles of the late 90s.

Retro is a completely free WordPress theme. We intentionally designed the theme to look horrible. However, we found that this nostalgic style is actually appealing to some people. Despite the hideous appearance and annoying midi music on every page, the theme features solid development and a fully responsive framework. And hey — we were kind enough to include an option within the WordPress customizer to change or disable the music. We recommend disabling it.

If you’re looking to bring some nostalgia into your blog, or play a practical joke on one your web clients — download Retro and give it a whirl.”

That is all for now. Happy WordPress site building! 🙂
