Top 10 job search tips
Finding a job can be daunting, especially if you had tried before and haven’t had much response or received plenty of rejection. Here I am going to give you tips which is quite obvious but not usually neglected that makes a big difference:
1.Make sure you are qualified and have experience for the job: You will be competing with a lot of other people with better experiences and perhaps specific qualification for that role. If there is a role you really want, I suggest that you do training that can get you a qualification or do work experience to add to your CV.
2. If you dont‘ have experience then look for entry level: If you are looking to change your job role and feel you got transferable skills, you could try looking for jobs that trains you up for the role. You can save time looking for jobs that require experience by searching for words such ‘entry level’, ‘trainee’, ‘training’, ‘no experience’, ‘apprentice’, ‘internship’ or ‘graduate’
3. Be aware that some roles are statistically gender-based: Despite the claim of moving towards gender equality, it is sad to say some jobs roles aren’t very gender equal and so you would have to not get so disappointed if you applied to jobs that aren’t friendly to your gender. Here are so examples: administrative, secretary and HR jobs are mostly female, and warehouse jobs, construction and pilot jobs are predominately male orientated. The chance of you getting it is low. But you never know: nothing ventured, nothing is gained.
4. Apply for jobs very early or with little competition: A lot of job positions left there for over a few days are likely to be taken. In most case, they would choose early applicant on the same day or the next. The chance of your giving an interview when being the 60th or 70th applicant are very low. Try to reply within a few hours or same day the job vacancy is released.
5. Include specific skill sets or attributes they want in the first few lines of CV: Whether in the top profile section in your CV or first few lines in your covering letter, make sure put your intentions and how qualified you or just the skills they want to be put there for them to see. They may be going through hundreds of CV and so time is important. It is effective to let them know you are suitable within the first paragraph. I’m sure they would like you for saving their time too.
6. Be willing to accept any role to begin with before changing role within a company: A lot of people are dishearted if they can’t get the role they wanted. However, don’t forget about the possibility of changing your roles once you get into the company. You can start off as a sale assistant and end up being a manager or work in HR later. So don’t feel dishearted if you can’t get the role the first time round. Networking and connection, being likeable in your company will take you far.
7. Be persistent: To get a job depends on various factors such as who you are competing with, how the interviewer feels etc… The most important thing is to keep on trying until you get it. The more applications you apply to the more chance of you being successful. So don’t feel dishearten and be persistent. Do take breaks and refresh yourself from time to time to refresh and relax.
8. Join a job agency: It helps a lot having a recruitment agent help you find a job. The employer of companies may be too busy to deal with the whole recruiting process and so they let the recruitment company find employees for them. So try to be in good terms with them!
9. Check each company’s website individually: Vacancies may not be posted to a job site unless they really can’t find any staff. A huge portion of jobs offer are usually given through networking and not initially published on job search sites. So it is a good idea to email the recruitment team in individual company and try your luck. The fact that you contact them directly may impress them with your keenness.
10. Use Linkedin: I haven’t used it but I have heard it has been an effective way to find a job recently
So don’t worry folks! Keep up the job search, be persistent and good luck!
