Reading aloud for peace

20140410aI have seen an interesting programme of an actress, Sayuri Yoshinaga (picture on the left), who now carries out tour reading poems written by victims from Hiroshima & Nagasaki atomic bomb event and the Fukushima daiichi nuclear diaster. She had been reading poems in events for the last 30 years. The poem is full of pain, full of determination to continue to live and hope. The poems were harmonious accompanied by music composed and played by one of my favourite musician, Ryuichi Sakamoto!

The NHK description of the programme beautifully described “The poems express sorrow and suffering, a belief in the strength of humankind to overcome hardship, and messages of hope for peace.”

I believe that by remembering the past pain caused by nuclear weapons and preventable natural calamity, it allows the people in society to take steps to prevent such event from happening again. Such positive impact from reading poems can encourage others to take positive actions such as actively promoting the disarmament of nuclear weapon to prevent such unfortunate events from reoccurring and encourage the development of science and technology to help people managed and survive such natural calamities.

I would like to conclude with Ryuichi Sakamoto (picture above) words and why he is working for this project:

“Unless there is peace, we can’t enjoy art. So, for me, there has to be peace”.

I recommend you to watch or attend their touching and heartfelt event!
