Job prospects during pandemic recession

During a pandemic recession, large number of workers will experience cut in their paycheck, hours cut or layoff, as well as business closure. The industries that are being hit hard are travel, airline, cruiseline, hotel, tourist, department store, restaurant, cafe and event-based (i.e. sporting, concerts and conventions) industry. If these business do recruit, they are likely to look for senior experienced staffs who can help do wider scope of task

Industries that are expected to grow are healthcare, online supermarket, telework, home entertainment and pharmaceutical vaccine research industry. These sectors are more likely to hire staff at apprentice or entry level, which is a good opportunity for those who wish to get their foot on that growing career path. Essential recession proof industries such as utility, residential real estate and consumer staples may be affected but will continue as usual.

1. Healthcare: Doctors, nurses, pharmacist, health call centre and other health profession will be needed more than ever. If you don’t have these qualification, consider applying for assistant or entry role. However, we advise you to reconsider working in healthcare if you are living with elderly or vulnerable immune compromise people including those with obesity, asthma or diabetes.

2. Online stores (Ecommerce): As people will be quarantined at home, demand for online store (especially online grocery delivery service) will be on the rise. Role for warehouse assistant, picker and packing is on demand. Major online stores such as Amazon and Tesco are looking to recruit more staff.

3. Shipping and delivery: Along with an increase in online shopping, shipping and deliver jobs will be on demand.

4. Online tutoring: As school closes and students studying online from home, so will the opportunity to find student who needs extra online tutoring. Due to the high demand, the qualification to tutor have lowered.

5. Childcare: With school closed and some parents need to work, childcare is needed.

6. Senior care worker: Regardless of the economic circumstances, with the rise of the baby boomer generation ageing, the need for senior care worker are on the rise. Job offer is still posted today.

7. Cleaner: There is now a demand for cleaners to sanitise regularly. Especially in hospitals and public areas.

8. Office jobs in growing companies: Some companies are growing rapidly due to the pandemic circumstance (especially in healthcare, online stores and tech industry), They need to recruit more admin, customer service and finance staff. Some will allows remote training and working.

9. Tech Support: With a significant rise of remote working, tech support is essential to ensure telework and cloud work system .

10. Agriculture: Farmers usually hire immigrant workers for seasonal work. Due to the travel ban and restriction, seasonal jobs are now available for the local people.

11. Accounting & Auditors: Business is likely to invest more in an accountant to help improve their financial health through budgeting and better management of tax and cash flow.

12. Charity and food bank: There will be more jobs will be available in the charity sector, especially in food banks during economic crisis.

1. Online jobs: As people are likely to be online than being outside, this will encourage business to invest more capital in building their online presence. This means jobs as digital marketing, social media management or digital illustrator will become more in demand.

2. Psychologist and social worker: Recession are hard times for individual and families. With stress, mental health issues being more common and potential domestic violence, psychologist or social worker are needed.

3 Law firms – bankruptcy specialist: With bankruptcy on the rise, businesses will be looking for a specialised lawyer in bankruptcy.

4. Debt collector: This is not a job I’d like to do but debt follows recession

5. Educator: Not only are we facing hardship in recession, but we are also living in a time where industries are constantly changing and innovating whilst many industries will cease to exist in the future. This mean there are opportunity in the education sector, where you can teach new skills to others. i.e. IT cloud based consultant skills are important during an increase of remote workers.

6. Work for turnaround companies: Some companies such as Private equity buys distress companies and turn it around. This is more common during recession period.

7. International business: During the time when a country goes through recession, where are still business opportunities abroad. Local business will be looking for workers who speaks different languages and understand how foreign businesses operate.

8. Procurement: Business will be hiring procurement team to help save cost through finding cheaper vendors.

9. Repair: Repairing will be less expensive than replace items, so repair business is likely to rise.

10. Security and law enforcement: Crime tends to rise during financial crisis, especially robbery or burglary. There will likely to be an increase in security guard and police job position.

11. Governmental jobs: During crisis, the government tends to take more responsibility so job position will be more available. This includes jobs in position in unemployment centre, account payable or tax collection.

Times of recession are very stressful and daunting for most of us. But remember to keep positive and know that there are always opportunity out there.
